In this candid & insightful conversation, world-renowned emotional well-being expert Richard D. Moat explains to Adds Fitch-Hussain (Founder & Content Specialist, thecontentCAST) why the unresolved emotions we carry can hold us back from living our best life.
The Hidden Burden of the Past
Many people struggle in their daily lives – whether with relationships, careers or personal satisfaction without realising the root cause lies in a ‘back catalogue’ of unexpressed emotions from the past. Richard explains that these lingering feelings, often stemming from our first 7yrs of childhood (the ‘imprint years’) stay trapped in our cellular memory. If we don’t reconcile these old emotional wounds, they become the invisible drivers of our current behaviours & decisions.
Why ‘The Story’ Isn’t the Solution
Contrary to traditional therapy that focuses on rehashing past trauma, Richard advocates for a ‘no-story’ approach. He argues that dwelling on the specific events of the past – the ‘what happened’ – often just deepens the emotional charge. Instead, he focuses on identifying how you feel about your life right now & what you want to do about that. By resolving these current emotional blockages, you can move forward without the weight of the past influencing your future.
Fear = The Greatest Motivator
The interview highlights a crucial insight: fear is often our primary driver. Whether it’s the fight or flight response or the tendency to fawn or ‘people-please’ to avoid rejection, these maladaptive behaviours are unconscious strategies we developed to survive. When we become fully aware of these patterns, we can stop operating on autopilot & live a more conscious life.
A Simple Exercise for Immediate Change
Richard shares a powerful, actionable exercise he calls ‘21 Times the Truth‘ to help anyone begin lightening their emotional load:
- Identify the feelings: Make a list of the emotions you are feeling that you would rather not feel (e.g. anger, sadness, fear, guilt, hurt, shame, disgust).
- Express them: Write down each feeling 21 times, or speak them out loud 21 times, in a safe space.
- Commit to change: This process helps ‘unblock’ the energy behind the emotion, moving you from ignorance to awareness & allowing you to respond to life more authentically.
By becoming truly honest about how you feel today & making the conscious choice to stop suppressing those emotions, you can change your energy, your vibration & ultimately, your results. As Richard concludes “the future doesn’t have to equal the past”.
